A “modern house” with modern wall on one side only

China's Potemkin village

This is a house in Jiaohe town, Luanchuan county, Henan province (河南省栾川县叫河乡). If you stand in front of it, it looks like a beautiful two-story house in the western countries. But when you take a side look, it turned out to be an old adobe house. The front wall is merely 1.5 m thick and is for decoration only. So, you may wonder why the owner make such a front wall?

The answer is that the poor peasants simply could not afford to build a decent house but the local government officials require them to decorate the town.

This is a typical phenomenon in China. People call it Chinese version of “Potemkin village“.
