Qian Xuesen handpicked Wang Yongzhi as chief architect

The Russian trained aerospace scientist Wang Yongzhi (王永志) is the general architect and designer of China’s first manned spacecraft Shenzhou 5 and Shenzhou 6. A recent news report from People’s Daily pointed that it was Qian Xuesen who picked him up as the chief lead of Chinese space exploration. The title of the report is “Wang Yongzhi recalled: Qian Xuesen picked me as the chief lead of the second generation of space exploration”.

That was the end of June 1964, when Wang Yongzhi entered into the Gobi Desert for the first time to participate the mission of launching of China’s first self-designed near-mid range missile. It was a hot summer. Previous test showed that the missile could not reach the target. Experts were considering how to add more propellant but failed due to the limitation of the size of the missile. At this moment, Wang stepped up and suggested to reduce the amount of alcohol propellant. But he was ignored. So, Wang visited Qian and presented his analysis and computation. He received support from Qian. Results proved that he was correct. Qian remembered this young man for his reverse reasoning.

After the successful launches of Shenzhou 5 and Shenzhou 6, Qian said that his pick was the right one. Wang wa different from others for his reverse reasoning.
